Watch Straps for Large Wrists: How to Choose the Right Length?

Finding a watch strap we really like is not always easy. For those with a larger wrist, the search can be even more challenging.

Over the past eight years, we have spoken to many NorteSpring customers who face exactly this difficulty: they find a strap they like, but it is simply not long enough to fit comfortably and securely on the wrist.

This problem is particularly common with two-piece watch straps. When a strap is too short, very little of the end remains after fastening and, in some cases, it barely reaches the keepers.

But there is another difficulty we hear about frequently.

Many of these customers are tired of finding the same solutions again and again: a black strap, a brown strap or a NATO strap. They want to be able to change things up, experiment with different materials and colours, and give their watches a different look, just like any other customer. Fortunately, there are now more alternatives available.

At NorteSpring, we have been gradually working to increase the variety of sizes, lug widths, materials and adjustment systems available across our watch straps. In this article, we have brought together some of the options we consider most interesting for larger wrists.

At what size can a wrist be considered large?

There is no universal classification that determines exactly when a wrist should be considered small, medium or large. As a general reference, we can consider:

• Up to approximately 16 cm: small wrist;
• Between 16 and 18 cm: medium wrist;
• From around 18–19 cm: we can begin to consider this a larger wrist size.

These measurements should, however, only be used as a general guide.

When choosing a watch strap specifically, wrist circumference is only one of the measurements we need to consider. Two people with exactly the same wrist circumference may require different strap lengths depending on the size of the watch case and the construction of the strap itself.

A watch with a larger case, for example, naturally takes up more space on the wrist and changes the strap length required to complete the overall circumference.

This is why, at NorteSpring, when a customer tells us they struggle to find straps that are long enough, we like to start with a much more practical reference: the length of a strap they already wear and know fits comfortably.

How can you tell if a watch strap is long enough for your wrist?

This is probably the first question to answer before choosing a new strap.

When a customer contacts us because they have a larger wrist, there is one piece of information we particularly like to know: what is the length of the strap they currently wear and know fits comfortably? For us, this is an excellent starting point.

If you have a two-piece strap that fits you well, you can measure the two sections separately and use those measurements as a reference when looking for a new strap.

It is common to see measurements such as 115 + 75 mm or 130 + 80 mm. These figures correspond to the length of the two sections of the strap.

For larger wrists, as a starting point, we would generally look for a strap measuring around 130 + 80 mm or longer, although this should not be considered an absolute rule.

There is another element that also forms part of the final circumference: the watch itself.

A larger watch case adds several millimetres to the overall fit, which means that two people with exactly the same wrist circumference may have different experiences with the same strap depending on the watch they are wearing.

This is precisely why, whenever there is any doubt, we prefer to compare the new strap with one the customer already wears comfortably.

A strap that is too short is not just a matter of comfort

There is one principle we consider particularly important when advising a customer: appearance should never come before comfort and the security of the watch.

A strap that is too short may force you to use the last available holes, fit excessively tightly or leave so little length at the end that it barely passes through the keepers. Besides being uncomfortable, this is not something we recommend.

A strap that is constantly worn under excessive tension will also be subject to greater friction and wear.

So, if you have to choose between a strap you really like but which is too short and another that offers the correct length, we would always recommend the second option. A watch should feel comfortable on the wrist and, above all, remain secure.

Classic Cut To Size: our first choice for larger wrists

If a customer asked us today which strap we would first recommend for comfortable everyday use on a larger wrist, we would probably start with our Classic Cut To Size FKM Rubber Watch Straps. And there is a very simple reason: the adjustment system is completely different from that of a conventional strap.

With the clasp already integrated, the strap offers approximately 230 mm of total length, to which we must also add the size of the watch case itself.

Instead of choosing between a traditional sequence of holes, the Cut To Size system allows the strap to be progressively trimmed along the existing markings until the right length for the wrist is achieved. There is then a second level of adjustment. The deployant clasp has four micro-adjustment positions, allowing small changes to be made without having to cut the strap again. This is particularly useful throughout the year.

In summer, for example, it is perfectly normal for the wrist to expand slightly due to the heat. In winter, the opposite may happen. The micro-adjustment system allows you to loosen or tighten the strap slightly without permanently changing its length. In addition, FKM rubber offers a very appealing combination of comfort, flexibility and durability for everyday wear.

And there is another factor that is important to us: colour. For someone who has spent years being limited to the same few solutions for larger wrists, finally being able to choose between different colours and pair the strap with different watches makes a real difference. This is not simply a theoretical recommendation.

We have already recommended this model to several NorteSpring customers with larger wrists, and the feedback has been very positive. In fact, one customer liked the Classic Cut To Size so much that, after trying the first one, he went on to choose several straps in different colours.

For his particular needs, it became one of the best solutions he had found for combining the length, comfort and appearance he was looking for.

NATO straps: the classic solution for larger wrists

NATO straps naturally remain an excellent alternative for anyone who needs extra length.

The three main models available at NorteSpring have an average total length of approximately 280 mm, although there may be slight differences between collections.

As a reference:

• Total length: approximately 280 mm
• First hole: approximately 170 mm
• Last hole: approximately 255 mm

It is precisely this length that makes NATO straps such a common choice for larger wrists. Interestingly, it is also one of the reasons why some customers who contact us want to try something different.

Many have been wearing NATO straps for a long time because they were one of the few options they could find for their wrist size. When they start looking for a new strap, they do not necessarily want another NATO strap: they want to discover alternatives.

That said, for those who enjoy this style, our NATO Classic, NATO Ribbed and Premium Seat Belt straps continue to offer a generous adjustment range and are available in different colours and patterns.

Tropical Rubber: a longer FKM rubber alternative

Another option that can sometimes be overlooked is our Tropical Rubber FKM Watch Strap. This model consists of two sections measuring 130 + 80 mm, giving a total strap length of 210 mm before taking the watch case into account.

This is more generous than many conventional rubber watch straps and can be a particularly interesting alternative for those who need a little extra length without choosing a NATO or metal strap.

In our experience, these proportions work particularly well for wrists measuring around 18 to 19 cm, where the additional length allows the strap to sit very naturally.

This does not mean that the Tropical Rubber is exclusively a strap for larger wrists. We regularly sell this model for more average wrist sizes, where the additional length simply results in a slightly longer strap end.

If you are looking for a FKM rubber watch strap with a traditional two-piece construction but need a little more room, this is certainly a model worth considering.

Metal watch straps: another excellent solution for larger wrists

Metal watch straps offer another important advantage: the ability to adjust the length through the links themselves or through the clasp system.

Within NorteSpring’s current collection, we highlight three options for anyone looking for a strap for a larger wrist.

Milanese Mesh Strap

Our Milanese Mesh Strap would be one of our first recommendations.

Unlike a conventional strap with predefined adjustment positions, the clasp can slide along the mesh, allowing for much more precise sizing.

In practice, the strap can be adjusted almost millimetre by millimetre.

This is particularly convenient if you like to change the fit of your strap slightly throughout the year. If your wrist expands during the warmer months, you can easily increase the circumference. In winter, you can tighten it again.

SteelLink Silver and Smart Silver Matte

For those who prefer a metal link bracelet, the SteelLink Silver and the Smart Silver Matte are also worth considering.

In these cases, the fit is adjusted by removing the necessary links until the correct size is achieved.

So, what is the best watch strap for a larger wrist?

There is no single answer because it depends on the watch, your wrist size and, naturally, the style you are looking for.

However, if we had to make a recommendation for someone with a larger wrist looking for a comfortable strap for everyday wear, our current order of preference would be:

1. Classic Cut To Size FKM Rubber Strap
For its generous sizing range and the combination of cut-to-size adjustment with four micro-adjustment positions.

2. Milanese Mesh Strap
For the exceptional freedom of adjustment and the ease with which the circumference can be increased or reduced slightly whenever necessary.

3. Metal Link Bracelet
Particularly when the clasp system also provides some form of micro-adjustment.

There are then two excellent alternatives: NATO straps, for those who enjoy this style, and the Tropical Rubber, particularly for anyone looking for a traditional two-piece FKM strap with a more generous length.

Have a larger wrist? Start by measuring the strap you already wear

Take a strap you currently wear and know fits you comfortably, and measure its length.

That information will be far more useful than simply saying that you have a “large” wrist.

When a customer contacts us, this is precisely one of the references we use to understand which of our models may provide a similar fit or, where necessary, offer a little more room.

And if a particular strap is not long enough, we would rather tell you.

For us, choosing a different model is always preferable to wearing a strap that is too tight or leaving your watch less secure on your wrist.

More options for larger wrists in the future

NorteSpring was founded in 2018 precisely because of the difficulty of finding universal watch straps that were different, well made and fairly priced. Eight years later, this remains one of our main goals.

Over the years, we have worked to increase not only the number of models available, but also the range of lug widths, colours, materials, buckle and clasp types, and strap lengths.

We know that finding a distinctive watch strap is still particularly difficult for anyone with a larger wrist. It is something we want to continue working on.

In fact, one possibility we would like to explore in the future is a collection of leather watch straps specifically designed for larger wrists, giving these customers even more options and the freedom to pair different strap styles with their watches.

Because having a larger wrist should not mean being limited to the same two or three watch straps.
