How to care for leather bracelets

If you like watches and have a few in your collection, it’s very likely that at least one of them has a leather strap. Leather remains one of the most prized materials in watchmaking, not only for its durability but also for its versatility – ideal for both casual and formal occasions.

However, just like the watch itself, leather straps require specific care to maintain their appearance and durability over time. In this article, we’ve put together the best practices for caring for and extending the life of your leather strap. Read on to find out everything you need to know!

How do you clean a leather strap properly?

You can clean your leather strap at home and achieve professional results by following these steps:

  1. Remove the strap from the watch. If possible, remove the strap before cleaning. This prevents water or cleaning products from coming into contact with the watch mechanism.

  2. Dry cleaning. Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, dirt and small particles from the surface of the strap, both on the outside and inside. Avoid rough cloths that could scratch or damage the leather.

  3. Cleaning with a suitable product. Lightly dampen a jewellery or glasses cleaning cloth with warm (never hot) water and add a drop of neutral (pH-balanced) liquid soap. Wipe the cloth in gentle circular motions over the entire surface of the strap, paying particular attention to the dirtiest areas. Avoid submerging the strap in water! Leather is a porous material and can absorb water, leading to deformation or the development of unpleasant odours.

  4. Remove any soap residue. Wipe the strap again with a microfibre cloth dampened only with water to remove any traces of soap.

  5. Proper drying. Allow the strap to dry naturally on a flat surface, away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators. Excessive heat can dry out the leather and cause cracks. Never use a hairdryer or attempt to speed up the process.

  6. Moisturising (optional). To maintain the leather’s suppleness and prevent it from drying out, you can apply a small amount of a leather-specific moisturiser using a soft cloth. Ensure the product is suitable for natural leather and does not contain harsh chemicals.

Extra care for leather straps

  • Avoid contact with water. Water and moisture are the enemies of leather. If possible, remove your watch when washing your hands, taking a shower or participating in water sports.

  • Do not fasten the strap too tightly The fit should be comfortable, without squeezing the wrist too tightly. A strap that is too tight can accelerate wear and tear and create permanent creases in the leather.

  • Alternate between different straps. If you wear the same watch frequently, having one or more spare straps (such as NATO straps, FKM rubber straps or metal straps) can significantly extend the lifespan of your leather strap.

  • Store the strap correctly. When you are not wearing the watch, store it in a cool, dry place, ideally inside a watch box or a protective pouch.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the leather to fade and make it more brittle over time.

  • Protect it from sweat and chemicals. In summer or in warmer environments, perspiration can be absorbed by the leather, leading to deterioration. If possible, opt for a strap made from a material that is more resistant to water and sweat during the warmer months. Also, avoid letting the strap come into contact with perfumes, creams or cleaning products, as these can stain and damage the leather.

Final notes

Leather straps require regular care to keep them in excellent condition. During the summer or on warmer days, it is advisable to clean them more frequently or alternate them with more water-resistant straps.
