Originally designed to withstand the harshest conditions, this type of watch remains to this day a symbol of robustness, simplicity and timeless style.
But what exactly is a Field Watch, and why does it remain so popular?
The military origins of the Field Watch

Omega WWW – um dos doze modelos oficiais fornecidos ao exército britânico durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.
The Field Watch was born in a military context, during the World Wars, when soldiers needed a practical, reliable watch that was easy to check quickly in the heat of battle.
It was during this period that the so-called “trench watches” emerged, which later evolved into field watches—robust, simple and resistant to shocks, dust and water.
One of the most striking examples of this era is the Omega WWW (Wrist Watch Waterproof), manufactured for the British Army at the end of the Second World War. This model was part of the collection known as the “Dirty Dozen”, comprising twelve Swiss brands selected to produce military watches to strict specifications: a matt black dial, clearly visible Arabic numerals, a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock and a sturdy steel case.
The functional design of the Omega WWW directly influenced the style that would later become known as the Field Watch: a watch designed to withstand the elements — and last.
How to recognise a Field Watch
If you look at a watch and find these features, you can be sure: you are looking at a classic Field Watch.
- A simple dial with large numerals, often featuring a 24-hour scale.
- Reliable movement – whether quartz or automatic.
- Shock, dust and water resistance.
- Compact case, usually between 36 and 40 mm, ideal for comfort on the wrist.
- A fabric or leather strap, designed for durability and comfort in challenging conditions.
Iconic models that define the style
Some models have become true milestones in watchmaking:
- Hamilton Khaki Field – the most iconic and closest to its military origins.
- Seiko SNK805 – an affordable classic and very popular among novice collectors.
- Timex Expedition – rugged, affordable and full of character.
- Bulova Hack – directly inspired by the models used in the Second World War.
Which straps go well with a Field Watch?
One of the great advantages of this style is its versatility. The watch is robust and minimalist, so it really comes to life with the right strap.
At NorteSpring, we have several options that are perfect for this type of watch:
- NATO straps – durable, comfortable and true to the military spirit. A Grey Ribbed NATO is a safe choice for a classic, understated look, whilst a Red-Beige Stripe Ribbed NATO adds a bolder, more adventurous touch.
- Leather straps – ideal for those who want a more vintage and elegant look, without compromising on sturdiness. Our genuine leather straps age with character and become even more beautiful over time.
- Canvas straps – very similar to the originals used in a military context, they are perfect for those seeking authenticity and comfort.
Who is this style for?
The Field Watch is for those who value:
