Start ShoppingThe watch strap is one of the key components of a watch, playing a vital role in both its durability and style. For this reason, we have decided to write this article to share with you what we consider to be the most important tips for choosing a replacement strap for your watch.
We are often contacted by our customers asking for help finding a new strap for watches that have stopped working, as they cannot find one identical to the original, or from the same brand, that matches and fits the watch properly. Getting stuck on the original strap is a common mistake and often leads to frustration with manufacturers, who quickly stop supplying straps for older models.
Over the last few years, we have sought to help as many people as possible who need a universal replacement strap for an older watch, or who simply want a new strap to add versatility to their watch — having more than one option allows you to adapt your watch to your daily life. For example, wearing an FKM rubber strap for a trip to the beach, or a NATO strap for a more relaxed look whilst on holiday.
If you’re looking for a new strap, read these 5 tips carefully and find the ideal strap that will fit your watch perfectly.
1- Choose the correct strap size
To ensure the strap fits your watch correctly, choosing the right size is the first golden rule.
If you still have the original strap, check if there is a numerical marking on the side that rests against your wrist. If you see the numbers “20” or “22”, for example, this means the strap width is 20 mm or 22 mm, respectively.
If there is no engraving, simply measure the distance between the lugs (or “wings”) of the watch. This distance, in millimetres, corresponds to the ideal strap size for your watch.

⚠️ Please note that some watches have a customised lug, and in such cases universal straps may not be compatible. For a universal strap to fit, the watch lugs must be straight, as shown in the examples below.

Note: If your watch has a very specific lug width, you may need a bespoke strap. If this is the case, please contact us — we’ll be happy to help.
2- Choose the correct length for your wrist

The second golden rule for finding the best strap for your watch is to check that the length of the new strap is suitable for your wrist.
Compare the measurements of your current strap with those of the one you wish to buy. If they are similar, the new strap is likely to fit well. If the measurements are slightly different, measure your wrist and compare it with the total length of the watch face plus the strap fastened at the last hole. If this measurement is greater, the strap should fit correctly, as the various holes allow you to adjust it to the ideal size.
If you have a wider-than-average wrist, metal straps and NATO straps can be excellent options. They are usually made in a length suitable for most wrists and allow for easy adjustments.
3- Have a good replacement tool

To make it easier to replace watch straps, specific tools have been developed that make the process quick and safe.
A good example is the Quick Release system, which allows you to change the strap in a matter of seconds without the need for tools.
Unfortunately, many of the best-known brands do not yet include this system in their original models, which means you may need a tool if you wish to change your watch strap regularly.
At NorteSpring, we offer four different models of strap replacement tools, including one specifically for metal straps. From the most basic version (€2.50), ideal for those who rarely change straps, to the premium tool (€9.90), which is super-durable and of superior quality.
4- Pay attention to the clasp on the new strap

The clasp is a functional element but also an aesthetic one. Whenever possible, opt for straps with stainless steel clasps, which offer greater durability and complement most watch faces.
If your watch face is shiny silver, a shiny silver buckle is ideal. If it is gold, choose a strap with a gold buckle. For more modern watch faces, shades such as black or rose gold also work very well.
At NorteSpring, you’ll find a range of models where you can choose the buckle colour: black, silver, gold and rose gold. Our aim is to make this option available on all models in the future.
If you wish to keep the watch’s original buckle, you should opt for a similar strap with compatible hole spacing. Usually, the width of the buckle is 2 mm or 4 mm narrower than that of the strap (for example, if the strap is 22 mm, the buckle should be 20 mm or 18 mm).
5- Choose the right material

Nowadays, watch straps are made from a wide variety of materials. The most commonly used by NorteSpring are:
-
Genuine leather straps – durable, comfortable and elegant. They suit both classic watches and sportier models well. However, they are not recommended in damp environments or where there is exposure to chemicals, as these can easily damage the leather.
-
FKM rubber straps – ideal for sports watches. Water- and dirt-resistant, they are easy to clean and very comfortable. Perfect for outdoor activities or trips to the beach.
-
Metal and Milanese bracelets – durable and sophisticated. They work well in more formal settings or damp environments, and are also very durable.
-
NATO straps (nylon) – lightweight, comfortable and ideal for a casual, sporty look. They are washable, but it is best to avoid very dirty environments, as frequent cleaning accelerates wear and tear.
Depending on the style of your watch and the environments in which you wear it, you should choose the material that offers the best performance and durability.
In conclusion…
The size of the strap, its length, the buckle, the material and a good replacement tool are the key points to consider before buying a new watch strap.
